About ten years ago while in mediation, a vision passed through me which in turn would inspire the making of this painting. In this meditation I would practice visualizing myself from a birds eye view. This meditation was inspired by the idea that at the center of our being, we are an observer. There is always this seat in consciousness that is witnessing our every thought and action. I would practice this often when meditating. The visual began directly outside of my body. I pictured myself and the room I was in. The perspective would then shift to a birds eye view, where I would envision my home and the street I lived on. My perspective shifted and I found my point of focus looking down on Planet Earth. Over time, I would eventually travel as far out as my mind’s eye could imagine. I would draw off of photos I have seen from the Hubble telescope to imagine myself, or the observer, traveling as far out as I could. This journey took me to the atomic level of everything. The bright stars that lit up the dark matter of space, transitioned into atoms. I was viewing space from a subatomic level. My point of view then began to focus further out, the image of atoms became molecules, molecules then became cells, following tissues and organs. And at last, I found my point of focus draw out of my body and I was the observer once more, in my room witnessing myself meditating.
This experience has become part of my understanding of our place in space. There is this feeling, this knowing that we are all part of one large organism.
As Alan Watts so simply put it “You are that vast thing you see far, far off with great telescopes”.
